Admission

Regular students

The admission process for the master’s and PhD programs for regular students is based on a protocol published by the PPGCTS. One of the documents a student should submit is an English proficiency certificate showing that they have at least a basic level for the master’s program or an intermediate level for the medical doctor program in one of the following proficiency tests: CTJ Proficiency Test, TEAP (Test of English for Academic Purposes) in Biology/Health fields, ALUMNI, FCE/CAMBRIDGE, CAE/CAMBRIDGE, MICHIGAN, IELTS, TOEFL ITP, or TOEFL IBT. The certificate date should not be more than five years prior to the year of registration. The student may be exempt from submitting this certificate if they take a Foreign Language Text Interpretation and Understanding Exam (step 1), which will assess the student’s interpretation and understanding skills with texts from the knowledge field of the program, and the answers will be in Portuguese. The student will be allowed to use a printed dictionary during this exam.

The main evaluation criteria are:

  1. Project evaluation: Evaluation of document format (ability to write texts following a certain format, such as dissertation/thesis and articles for scientific journals), text clarity (reader’s need for rereading or additional explanation), expected results, and feasibility, among others.
  2. Résumé assessment: Analyzes supporting documents that attest the items of the student’s CVLattes.
  3. Individual assessment of oral presentation: Evaluation of oral presentation skills of the student, max. 30 minutes, as follows: 5 minutes for a general description, 10 minutes for a scientific article, and 15 minutes for questions from the board of examiners. Audiovisual resources are recommended, such as a multimedia projector and graphic presentation software.

Students with special needs

The admission process for students with special needs is also based on a protocol published by the PPGCTS. The student should fulfill the requirements and submit the documents requested in the general rules of the program and the UnB. The documents are analyzed by the professors in charge of the discipline and/or the program coordinators.
